The name of the group came from a Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.

The third album from Toto, Turn Back, was an unfulfilling success in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour established them as a brand all over the world.

After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.

Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begin an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
